  Hi Dan. It sure sounds like something is not working in the direction switching.
Here is the truth table for switching. I recommend you check it at both ends,
 the shack and controller.

3 element switching

Direction 1 (N)   Ctrl 1  Gnd

Direction 2         Ctrl 3 & 4 Gnd

Direction 3         Ctrl 2 Gnd

Direction 4         Ctrl 1 & 4 Gnd

Direction 5         Ctrl 3 Gnd

Direction 6         Ctrl 2 & 4 Gnd

All other Ctrl lines should remain at power supply voltage when not switched.
